Belgian summers are getting hotter and that impacts digital infrastructure. Combined with the continued expansion of the network and the growing number of active components, cooling has become a critical challenge. That’s why Eurofiber has a dedicated heat protocol in place, including continuous monitoring, smart temperature sensors and rapid interventions. Everything is managed centrally by our 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC).
Data in the heat zone
Across our fiber network in both Belgium and the Netherlands, sensors continuously monitor temperatures inside street cabinets and technical rooms, both ambient and equipment-specific. Each cabinet is configured with a unique threshold. When it’s exceeded, the NOC receives an automatic alert. If it’s a temporary spike, monitoring is sufficient. But if the temperature remains elevated, the heat protocol is activated.
From alert to action
When overheating is detected, an intervention is immediately launched. In Belgium, Eurofiber works with partners like Circet, who take action on-site: opening cabinet doors, placing fans or mobile AC units, creating shade with tents or parasols, or even manually cooling components.
The NOC coordinates closely with the Site & OLO Management team, which is responsible for preventive maintenance and long-term improvements such as heat-resistant enclosures and enhanced cabinet ventilation.
Smart prioritization
The NOC monitors thousands of network points in Belgium and the Netherlands. To manage this scale, a refined alerting system is in place: each cabinet has a custom temperature threshold based on its location, equipment and insulation. This ensures only critical alerts get escalated, cutting through the noise and improving responsiveness.
“Heat is an issue we take seriously. The climate is changing, and now is the time to prepare.”
- Frans Randolfi, Manager Network Operations & SOC
Ready for 40 degrees and beyond
Overheating incidents remain rare today. But with growing network density and rising temperatures, the tipping point is approaching.
That’s why Eurofiber is already investing in scalable, future-proof solutions, because prevention is always better than downtime.
And when the real heat hits? We’ll be ready.
