In this environment, private cloud is back in the spotlight. Yet there are a few persistent misconceptions surrounding this topic. We’d like to set the record straight here.
Misconception 1: A private cloud is just “on-premise 2.0”
When people think of a private cloud, many still picture a traditional server room: proprietary hardware, manual management, and little flexibility. From that perspective, a private cloud feels like a step backward. But modern private clouds operate entirely in a cloud-native way, using APIs, automation, self-service, and containers. You can develop just as quickly as you’re used to on major public cloud platforms.
The real difference isn’t in how you work, but where the environment is located, who manages it, and what rules apply to it. That’s where the private cloud becomes strategic.
Misconception 2: A private cloud is less flexible
“With a private cloud, I have to create a ticket for every change.” We hear that a lot. But it’s no longer true. Modern private clouds use the same self-service portal and automation as Azure or AWS. Want to create a new VM or scale out a Kubernetes cluster? You can do it yourself, with no wait time.
The difference is where you run it: entirely in the Netherlands, with clear chain of responsibility and direct visibility into what’s happening. You maintain speed, but on a foundation that’s yours.
Misconception 3: Innovation only happens in the public cloud
The public cloud is ideal for AI, analytics, and experimentation. That much is clear. But that doesn’t mean your entire infrastructure has to be based there. More and more organizations are consciously opting for a separate landscape. Sensitive or business-critical data is stored in a private cloud environment in the Netherlands. For AI or analytics, you temporarily use the public cloud via a secure connection.
This way, you continue to innovate while maintaining control over your data and your supply chain. And if necessary, you can shut down the external connection.
Misconception 4: A private cloud is more expensive and less scalable
At first glance, the public cloud seems cheaper. But in practice, many organizations find that costs rise faster than expected, especially as workloads grow or data flows become more intensive. The private cloud operates on a stable and transparent cost model. You won’t face any surprises from egress fees or variable services. Performance is predictable, making planning and accountability easier. This makes discussions with auditors and executives much simpler.
Misconception 5: A private cloud is only for legacy systems
That idea is no longer accurate. It is precisely organizations with a significant social responsibility that are consciously choosing private cloud solutions: governments, healthcare institutions, financial institutions, and other critical entities.
Executives are increasingly held personally accountable for incidents. In such cases, demonstrable control carries more weight than hype. Organizations also want to be certain that their data is subject to European regulations and is not accessible to foreign parties.
In addition, due to labor market shortages, much IT work is shifting to managed services. This aligns well with a private cloud model in which management, security, and infrastructure are delivered as a single service.
