<pp:caseid>737630</pp:caseid>

Today during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, Eurofiber and Nokia announces that 5G RedCap is officially being added to its existing Private 5G ecosystem, which Eurofiber has built together with strategic partners Nokia, NTT DATA, Greenet and Netways. With this addition, Eurofiber takes the next step in delivering secure, scalable and future-proof private mobile networks for business users.

5G RedCap: a logical extension to a mature ecosystem
Together with Nokia and the other strategic partners, Eurofiber is building a Private 5G ecosystem based on secure, scalable and sector-specific 5G solutions on top of Eurofiber’s fiber infrastructure. 5G RedCap fits seamlessly into this strategy. The technology is designed for large-scale IoT applications that require reliability and low latency, but not the full 5G bandwidth. It offers lower complexity than full 5G modems, reduced energy consumption, affordable modules, and support for large numbers of IoT devices such as sensors, wearables and cameras.

Growing demand in industry, logistics, healthcare and construction
In virtually all sectors, demand for scalable IoT connectivity is increasing — a trend Eurofiber sees clearly in the market. By making 5G RedCap available within the private network, a crucial missing link in modern IoT connectivity is filled. No Dutch operator has commercially rolled out 5G RedCap yet, making this private 5G ecosystem once again a frontrunner.

Secure, scalable and economically attractive
5G RedCap makes it possible to start IoT projects easily and scale them up step by step without major upfront investments. This aligns with the existing private 5G service model and creates opportunities in industry, healthcare, logistics and construction. With 5G RedCap, integrating OT equipment and IT networks also becomes easier. The technology enables real-time data collection with reliable coverage and low latency in dynamic environments. Thanks to the implementation of 5G RedCap, IoT devices can now be directly connected to Eurofiber’s secure, open fiber backbone — a major advantage compared to WiFi, BLE or LPWAN technologies.

Phaedra Kortekaas, Managing Director Eurofiber Netherlands “With the introduction of 5G RedCap within our Private 5G ecosystem, we are giving our customers a powerful new building block for their digital transformation.
Why Europe Should Not Disrupt Investor Confidence In Fixed Markets

European regulation sought to strike a balance between competition and incentivising the long-term investment required to build and run high-quality, gigabit fixed fibre connectivity.

In contrast to mobile, fixed access including ducts and poles remains a de facto natural monopoly across much of the EU and is impossible to fully replicate.
To serve European businesses and enterprises, operators must also offer connectivity at a variety of urban and rural sites. Given that only incumbent operators have nationwide coverage, wholesale access remains key.

It is therefore alarming that the European Commission is now proposing to relax regulation on former fixed monopolies.
We believe that the Commission’s proposals are a backwards step. Deregulation of wholesale access would lead to re-monopolisation and stifle competition and investment in fixed connectivity services, particularly during the migration from copper to fibre.

This approach contrasts starkly with the principles of competition as a driver for investment that the Commission has rightly championed for decades. And it would entrench dominance, notably in underserved areas, imperilling the pace of full fibre infrastructure rollout and gigabit-capable services for millions of Europeans.
It would therefore be both premature and significantly undermine regulatory certainty if Europe departs from the well-established ex-ante model or removes all markets from the Recommendation on Relevant Markets (RRM).

This would result in a less competitive investment case for fixed telecoms in Europe, stranding billions of euros committed by the private sector and reducing investor sentiment.

The current Commission’s proposals would further suppress future take up of services by consumers and businesses, inhibit network innovation, and make it more challenging for Europe to achieve its Digital Decade 2030 targets.
Instead, we urge the Commission to enshrine a predictable framework for fixed infrastructure based on the following principles:

1. Preserve the ex-ante model to spur competition and investment in the sector and increase consumer choice and take-up.
Ex-ante regulation remains essential for wholesale local access (market one) and wholesale dedicated capacity for business connectivity (market two) - including dark fibre access. Symmetric obligations under the Gigabit Infrastructure Act are not a substitute for targeted remedies aimed at taming excessive market power such as access to passive fibre services, especially in areas where infrastructure competition is unlikely to emerge.

2. Ensure access to physical infrastructure, including ducts and poles.
In many EU member states, this infrastructure is still largely controlled by a single operator, creating a de facto monopoly.

3. Complete the Digital Networks Act before considering changes to the RRM framework.
The EU’s connectivity strategy in the Digital Networks Act should be implemented and its impact fully assessed before the Commission should consider changes to the RRM framework. The Commission must adequately consider that national regulators still find a need to regulate markets one and two. Of the 27 EU NRAs, 23 currently regulate market one and 15 regulate market two.
Long-term investment in fibre networks depends on regulatory certainty. But Europe’s Digital Decade 2030 ambitions can only be achieved if the Commission adopts a balanced, evidence-based approach to regulation of the fixed telecoms market.
Without this, Europe’s digital future will continue to falter as global competitors race ahead, leading to weak productivity growth, stagnant living standards and a less secure continent.

We therefore call on the Commission to work closely with industry and national regulators to ensure that the regulatory framework continues to support both investment and competition for all players.

The undersigned companies collectively operate networks across all 27 Member States of the European Union, serving around 240 million customers.
Edward Bouygues, Chairman, Bouygues Telecom
Keri Gilder, CEO, Colt Technology Services
Alex Goldblum, CEO, Eurofiber
Walter Renna, CEO, Fastweb+Vodafone (Italy)
Thomas Reynaud, CEO, iliad Group
Giuseppe Gola, CEO, Open Fiber
Robert Finnegan, CKHH-HWEL Deputy Chairman, CK Hutchison Group Telecom (Three Group)
Ralph Dommermuth, CEO, 1&1 AG
Margherita Della Valle, CEO, Vodafone Group Plc

company,business,news

Eurofiber has been commissioned by Air Traffic Control the Netherlands to connect new digital infrastructure between the Dutch airports where LVNL provides air traffic control services at the airports of Schiphol, Rotterdam-The Hague, Maastricht, Eelde and Lelystad. Fiberoptic connections were laid over a total distance of 560 kilometers to connect the ten LVNL locations to the Eurofiber core network. More than 25 kilometers of this involved excavation works to lay new fiberoptic cable. This ultra-redundant network provides fully separated infrastructure that meets the highest security standards. A trial setup demonstrated that the use of quantum technology prevents access to sensitive information. In the future, this new communication system could improve the security of the tens of thousands of seagoing vessels that visit the port every year and better secure the resulting economic traffic from the threat of quantum computers. Eurofiber has reached another important milestone with the official validation of our Net-Zero targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As of early 2025, just over 1,600 companies worldwide have achieved approval of their Net-Zero targets and Eurofiber will now be added to this highly selective group. SBTi approval shows that Eurofiber’s climate goals align with the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard, strengthening our company’s commitment to meaningful climate action.

Partner organizations who facilitated SBTi’s growth and development are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). In its role as a corporate climate action organization, the SBTi helps companies worldwide set science-based emissions reduction targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels.

A roadmap to net-zero
Eurofiber commits to reaching net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040. By 2030, it will cut scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 90% from its 2021 baseline, ensure 100% renewable electricity sourcing, and reduce scope 3 emissions by 30%. From 2030 to 2040, it will maintain a minimum 90% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions and further reduce scope 3 emissions by 90%, fully aligning with its net-zero target.

Eurofiber has already significantly reduced its carbon footprint for scope 1 & 2 (direct emissions and electricity purchases) in recent years; this now amounts to only approximately 3% of our entire CO2 footprint. In order to also achieve our objectives in our supply chain (scope 3), we have established a supplier engagement program to inspire, enthuse and advise Eurofiber’s suppliers on improving sustainability of their products and organization. This will result in a further reduction of CO2 emissions in our supply chain in the coming years, moving towards net-zero in 2040.

Sustainability at the core of business strategy
Eurofiber has a leading role in society in the field of digital infrastructure. We believe that this entails a broader responsibility, and are firmly committed to pursuing sustainable growth for our own organization, for our employees and for society as a whole. Our ESG policy encompasses sustainable production at our suppliers, an inclusive work environment for our employees, and climate change mitigation, including innovations serving the energy transition and the digital transition. In May 2024, Eurofiber was ranked in the top 1% of best-performing companies globally by EcoVadis, acknowledging the company’s strong ESG program.

Not only is Eurofiber moving towards an increasingly international focus in its business activities, but Eurofiber's ESG team is also taking on a leading role internationally. Together with NLconnect, the Dutch IT-sector organization, Eurofiber has joined a consortium of 18 parties working on preparing Product Category Rules (PCR) for active and passive equipment in fiber optic networks. Worldwide, companies can now use these PRCs to prepare Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for their products.

Jeroen Kanselaar, ESG manager at Eurofiber, chairs the Sustainability Committee of the FTTH Council. This committee recently launched the FTTH Eco Platform, which supports companies in the sector in calculating their CO2 footprint at an organizational level. Uniquely, the Eco Platform also offers outcomes of carbon emission impacts for the entire European sector. Kanselaar is also co-lead of the Green Digital Action program of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), bringing together partners worldwide to advance climate action through digital innovation.

Eurofiber’s strategy for achieving these Net-Zero Targets is in line with the FTTH Council ambitions to create a digital and sustainable Europe with full fiber. Similarly, it is aligned with the ITU calls to action at COP28 as well as the ITU Declaration on Green Digital Action at COP29.

To learn more about Eurofiber’s sustainability initiatives and ESG commitments, check out our latest ESG report here.

More information about SBTi please find here

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

This collaboration makes quantum-safe communication solutions and expanded secure data transfer capabilities available for organizations across Eurofiber's network.

A steady increase in cyber threats and evolving global regulatory requirements are driving a spike in demand for quantum-safe encryption. Eurofiber is therefore partnering with Juniper Networks and Quantum Bridge to integrate advanced post-quantum cryptography into its extensive network infrastructure. This partnership positions the companies at the forefront of the emerging quantum technology market, securing these networks from cyberattacks using a quantum computer by combining Juniper Networks’ SRX firewalls with Quantum Bridge’s DSKE technology.

Quantum Bridge's patented DSKE technology does not rely on traditional asymmetric cryptography, a part of today’s encryption which is both widely used and vulnerable to quantum cyberattacks. DSKE is an unbreakable security solution which seamlessly integrates with existing firewalls and infrastructure, enabling Eurofiber to provide scalable, future-proof security for its clients. By combining cutting-edge key distribution technology with Eurofiber’s reliable connectivity, sensitive customer data is automatically protected against potential attacks using a quantum computer.

Partnering with Juniper and Quantum Bridge strengthens our commitment to secure and reliable connectivity. The partnership leverages our position as a leader in the fiberoptic market and ensures our customers are protected against evolving cyber threats, including those posed by quantum computing. Over the past few years, we have collaborated with partners to test various advanced technologies, including Post Quantum Cryptography, QKD and DSKE” said Eric Kuisch, COO at Eurofiber.

DSKE technology
Distributed symmetric key establishment (DSKE) is an advanced and highly scalable key distribution technology trusted by large financial institutions, enterprise clients, and service providers that require a multi-layer, defense-in-depth security strategy. It fully automates the creation and distribution of symmetric keys, without relying on computational complexity or asymmetric encryption. DSKE is the industry’s first scalable symmetric key distribution technology, combining the scalability of public key infrastructure (PKI), the security of quantum key distribution (QKD) and the simplicity of pre-shared keys.

Quantum-safe financial systems
Recently, Eurofiber successfully showcased the DSKE technology in a high-security environment.
At a recent meeting of central banks in Rome, representatives from G7 countries discussed the cryptographic risks associated with the advancement of quantum computing. On that occasion, Eurofiber demonstrated how the Quantum Bridge DSKE technology combined with Juniper Networks SRX firewalls can play a leading role in securing the financial system from attacks by malicious actors using quantum computers. The demonstration was attended by global leaders in central banking and commercial banking who agreed that now is the time to plan an orderly migration of the financial system towards quantum-safe encryption.

“Our collaboration with Eurofiber and Juniper Networks represents a significant step forward in delivering quantum-safe communication solutions to a rapidly expanding pool of customers. By integrating our DSKE technology into Eurofiber’s infrastructure and Juniper’s SRX firewalls, we’re not just addressing current security needs but also preparing for the challenges of tomorrow’s digital landscape,” said Mattia Montagna, CEO of Quantum Bridge.

“Quantum computers capable of breaking today’s asymmetric encryption may be as little as 5 years away according to some experts. It is therefore vital to act now to protect sensitive data and networks. This is why, together with Eurofiber and Quantum Bridge, we have developed a simple and easy-to-implement system which works with existing network infrastructure, making it easy for government corporations and other key stakeholders to protect their systems.” said Melchior Aelmans, Chief Architect & Quantum Lead at Juniper Network

About Juniper
Juniper Networks believes that connectivity is not the same as experiencing a great connection. This successful partnership lets business customers benefit from Odido’s high-quality services provided through Eurofiber’s reliable fiberoptic network. Since the partnership began in 2016, the two sides have jointly rolled out fiberoptic cable to thousands of businesses. The new partnership agreement has a ten-year term.

Essential infrastructure for the business market
The renewal of this partnership highlights the critical importance of Fiber to the Office (FttO) solutions for the business market. By laying high-quality fiberoptic connections, Eurofiber and Odido are providing the infrastructure that is vitally important to modern business operations. This infrastructure provides not only the highest standards of service quality and reliability, but also offers greater flexibility to respond to changing customer needs in terms of speed, capacity and new business locations.

In this partnership, Odido has full control over the active layer of the network along with the services provided, operating through Eurofiber’s fiberoptic infrastructure. In order to offer the highest quality of service, Odido manages the technology and equipment needed to regulate and optimize data traffic. Odido can also respond quickly to technological innovations and customer needs to deliver customized solutions aligned with each company’s specific requirements.

Sustainability and efficiency
A key aspect of this partnership is the drive towards sustainability, which is in line with the broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals of both companies. This total solution includes construction, expansion and maintenance of the fiberoptic network that is the backbone of the new infrastructure for LVNL.

Fiberoptic connections were laid over a total distance of 560 kilometers to connect the ten LVNL locations to the Eurofiber core network. More than 25 kilometers of this involved excavation works to lay new fiberoptic cable. Capacity has been expanded to four fully separate 10 Gb/s DWDM routes, as needed to meet current and future requirements for reliability, speed and security. The new fiberoptic connections guarantee that all the applications that LVNL uses to safely guide all aircraft continue functioning optimally at all times. Before the new infrastructure was launched, this extensive project required the daily efforts of more than 50 engineers, network architects and other experts for 10 months.
Construction was handled by Eurofiber partners Spie and BAM Telecom, while monitoring and processing is arranged in partnership with Proximus NXT (formerly Telindus).

Ultra-redundant network
LVNL has been tasked with managing the civil airspace over the Netherlands and part of the North Sea. Any aircraft crossing Dutch airspace or planning to land at or take off from an airport in the Netherlands must be able to do so in the safest way possible. LVNL provides extremely safe and efficient 24/7 handling of the huge flow of incoming and outgoing air traffic to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the regional airports elsewhere in the Netherlands. The new network delivered by Eurofiber is ultra redundant: four routes that are fully geographically separated. This extremely reliable network achieves a perfect balance between supreme availability, standardization and scalability, allowing seamless continuity in critical operations and enabling flexibility in handling current and future data flows.

Crucial Voice Communication System
The new nationwide network gives LVNL the ability to expand services to and from the region and guarantee continuity. This includes the Voice Communication System: the crucial voice link between the air traffic controller and the pilot of the aircraft. This VCS system is a safe, reliable connection which is being built centrally at Schiphol and rolled out for regional airports, thanks to the new network structure. This eliminates the need for a standalone local system. The availability of additional bandwidth creates space for new applications, such as Remote Tower, which will eventually make it possible to centralize air traffic control across several different airports.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

<pp:quotetext>Air Traffic Control the Netherlands is responsible for the safe handling of air traffic in the Netherlands, 24/7. A safe and reliable connection is essential to perform the high-impact job of air traffic controller properly, safely and efficiently. What air traffic controllers do is supported by a huge amount of technology and engineering, not only at Schiphol Airport but all across the Netherlands. That makes it incredibly important to ensure that the technology and IT always work. Massive amounts of data are transferred back and forth, and we cannot afford any mistakes; this is literally keeping all the air traffic in the air. It is vitally important to support aviation in this context.</pp:quotetext>

A trial setup demonstrated that the use of quantum technology prevents access to sensitive information. In future, this new communication system could improve the security of the tens of thousands of seagoing vessels that visit the port every year and also better secure the resulting economic traffic from the threat of quantum computers.

Distribution of quantum keys
During the trial, which started in late 2022, a central hub for creating a quantum network was installed by Q*Bird in Eurofiber’s data centre. This central hub is connected to two endpoints at Portbase and Port of Rotterdam Authority. These two endpoints exchanged data secured with quantum keys during the trial period. The generation and distribution of keys takes place within the quantum network, with Q*Bird using a unique multipoint-to-multipoint configuration for the endpoints. Many new endpoints can be connected to the central hub, each of which can generate quantum keys. Other quantum key distribution systems rely on a less flexible peer-to-peer configuration. Q*Bird is the only party in the world to offer this scalable system. The system can also be used to secure other critical infrastructure networks in the Netherlands. In light of the success of this trial, new endpoints at Customs and a number of nautical service providers in the port will be connected to the central hub over the course of this year.

Ready for the future
The setup built during the trial will allow multiple end-users to be provided with a secure, untappable connection in the future. The strength of this setup is the ease with which it can be expanded to many more users and the relatively low cost of such expansion. After connection, the parties involved can be sure that the communication line has not been tampered with. If a hacker tries to steal the keys, the laws of quantum mechanics ensure that users are notified as soon as the keys are compromised. Another set of keys is then created to securely exchange further messages.

Rapid development of quantum communication
Cybersecurity is currently ensured by data encryption based on calculations that today’s computers are barely able to solve. However, a powerful quantum computer can crack algorithms and expose sensitive data. Due to the unprecedented computing power of quantum computers, encrypted information can be decrypted in no time at the risk of state and corporate secrets becoming accessible to parties with malicious intent. Also, data that is intercepted and stored now can be cracked with a quantum computer at a later date.
Quantum technology is developing at lightning speed right now, so the quantum computer is arriving faster than expected. Quantum technology has unprecedented potential for solving complex problems, but at the same time, it therefore also poses serious threats. For companies with critical infrastructure, such as the Port Authority, this could represent a serious threat of business disruption resulting in major financial losses and physical damage. Increasing cyber resilience is therefore more important than ever.

Dutch news article newsroom Port of Rotterdam

Video Quantum Encrypted Fiber Network in Port of Rotterdam

news,partnership,innovation,business

<pp:caseid>614444</pp:caseid>

A consortium of seven Dutch companies and research institutes will receive funding from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate after the European Commission gave the green light to the IPCEI-CIS program on December 5th of this year. This stands for Important Project of Common European Interest - Cloud Infrastructure and Services. The consortium will receive the funding for the Modular Integrated Sustainable Datacenter project (MISD). Participants in the consortium are Asperitas, BetterBe, Deerns, Eurofiber, NBIP (National Internet Providers Management Organization), TNO and University of Twente. The Dutch government is allocating €70 million for MISD and other Dutch IPCEI-CIS projects. In total, IPCEI-CIS will provide €1.2 billion in funding to a variety of initiatives to drive the development of a European cloud infrastructure.

The aim of MISD is to develop a new modular, sustainable and secure-by-design concept to be deployed in places close to end users (edge computing). The guiding principle is to achieve a significant reduction in total energy consumption, from cooling to computing power and data flows. Thereby, a CO2 reduction of more than 50% is set to be achieved in a validated, distributed setup in a field lab where different innovations developed in the project converge. The duration of the project is 5 years, from 2024 to 2029.

The MISD consortium is thus taking the lead in European partnerships to embed sustainable applications into the foundation of the next generation of European cloud infrastructure and services. Maikel Bouricius, CMO of lead partner Asperitas on the project: "The MISD project is the outcome of years of collaboration in the Netherlands on energy-efficient data centers. Many stakeholders were involved in the initial phase to shape this initiative and this funding makes it possible for the Netherlands to be a development hub for the next generation of data centers. There are more field lab initiatives in Europe, but the distributed set up, scale and variety of innovations it will welcome is unique."

Pioneering technology
The award of the funding is an important step towards the cloud infrastructure of the future. The consortium participants aim to develop a sustainable answer to the growing demand for (local) data center capacity in a more flexible way than is currently possible. Bouricius: "Asperitas will work on the big challenge for cooling in the coming years. Compute requires more and more power, space and water, and advanced liquid cooling solutions are needed to make this growth sustainable. Optimal results require collaboration with a broad ecosystem, which this project makes possible."

Sustainability is thus an important cornerstone of the project, underlines Theo Balijon, Digital Transformation Officer at BetterBe. "We will contribute to the development and realization of modular energy-efficient data center housing with distributed cloud infrastructure platforms. In addition, we will investigate how reduction of CPU cycles can be realized in application software."

Jonathan Clark, Data Centre Sustainability Lead at Deerns said: “We are proud to be part of the consortium driving the creation of a 'Modular Integrated Sustainable Data Centre of the Future' in the Netherlands. In collaboration with partners we are pioneering innovative solutions for data centers. This groundbreaking project underscores Deerns MEP's design, building physics, energy concepts and energy efficiency modelling. These modular, integrated and sustainable solutions set new benchmarks for design excellence eco-friendliness.”

Distributed data center workloads
Another important way to maximize the energy efficiency of the infrastructure to be designed is to spread workloads within the distributed network to those places where there are surpluses of renewable energy. This requires solid fiber-optic connections. Eurofiber brings its expertise to this theme, among others. "The development of a staging lab and a -via fiber connected- geographically distributed field lab environment will be part of our contribution to this project. Developing energy, data and compute use cases is also part of this," says Martin Vos, Business Innovation Director at Eurofiber.

Given the constantly changing online threat landscape, security by design is a key focus: the infrastructure will be designed with availability and security in mind. "NBIP will investigate how the availability of online services can be secured in this new cloud infrastructure, for example by distributed DDoS mitigation. In the field lab, we want to demonstrate that a secure by design distributed setup makes cloud infrastructures more secure and reliable", said Octavia de Weerdt, director of NBIP.

A more sustainable cloud
Ultimately, the project should enable a more sustainable cloud. To that end, it is important to make climate impact measurable. Marc van Dijk, TNO portfolio lead Digital Infrastructures: "We are investigating how sustainability parameters in distributed and federated data centres can be used to reduce the climate impact of cloud use. The software components we develop will make data centers contribute more to the flexibility needed in power grids to better deal with the variation in supply and demand of (green) energy."

Finally, the University of Twente focuses on four sustainability-oriented lines of research, describes Maria Vlasiou, professor of stochastic networks. "These include scalable, sustainable, innovative computational approaches for data center operations and data centers as active support for the power grid. We will also focus on advanced thermal management for sustainable cooling and heat utilization, software solutions for secure multi-party cloud systems, and stakeholder engagement through learning communities for inter-organizational learning and innovation implementation."

Educating the public and stakeholders on progress
The consortium is developing a website to keep stakeholders and interested parties informed of the project's progress. In addition, consortium participants will proactively share their knowledge gained during the project, for example during events, workshops, knowledge sessions and webinars.

About the Modular Integrated Sustainable Datacenter (MISD) project
MISD will start in 2024 as a joint project of Asperitas, BetterBe, Deerns, Eurofiber, Nationale Beheersorganisatie Internet Providers (NBIP), TNO and University of Twente to develop a new generation of sustainable, energy-efficient, modular and secure-by-design data centers. To this end, the consortium has received funding from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate in late 2023 under the European Important Projects of Common European Interest - Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS) program. The MISD project will run for five years.

Innovations resulting from the project will come together in a geographically distributed field lab. Research and development will include new liquid cooling techniques, making housing and compute more energy efficient, security by design in a distributed cloud infrastructure, parameters for the climate impact of cloud usage and its reduction, and data centers as support for a more flexible energy infrastructure. The consortium will launch a website in 2024 to inform about, and engage stakeholders and the public with the project's progress.

news,esg,technology

Its backbone network covers the whole of France and extends to Germany.

Avelia, headquartered in Nice, was founded in 2003 and was acquired by Septeo in early 2022. This hoodie symbolizes a special recognition for learners and innovators who use Salesforce to build successful careers, companies and/or communities all over the world. Sima’s story of hope - fleeing from her home country for safety reasons and starting a new career in a new country as a Salesforce developer in The Netherlands at Eurofiber, through Refugeeforce – inspired many people.

Steven Klockaerts, Eurofiber Group CIO: ‘Our entire IT team felt very proud to see Sima on stage during Dreamforce. And even colleagues within the IT team who didn’t know Sima, or just got to know her briefly, felt that. She really knows how to take the stage, I really enjoyed seeing that’, Steven adds [with a big smile]. ‘I never doubted that an individual like Sima would bring so much to Eurofiber. And not just in terms of her work, but also the positivity and the energy she brought to the team. I really believe we perform better as a team because of that.’

Sima, who’s now currently working as a Salesforce consultant at Capgemini, started as a Salesforce developer at Eurofiber in December 2019. She was one of the candidates Eurofiber hired through Refugeeforce, a charity that has the mission to create more opportunities and access for refugees.

Steven: ‘The opportunity of taking part in the Refugeeforce program, being able to coach someone as a team and seeing them thrive, gives back so much positive vibes, team spirit, energy and adds to our happiness at work. It makes you step out of your daily routine and become more humble as a human being.’

Initially, the plan was to hire one candidate, but Steven’s team asked if him it was possible to hire one more. Steven: ‘My team always interviews candidates before a manager interviews them, because the team has to work with them. When I asked who wanted to interview candidates from Refugeeforce, a lot of people from our team stepped up. Hearing the stories and journeys of the candidates, really made an impact on the team, which is why it was extremely difficult for us to only hire one – and eventually two.’ Yet at the same time, as Steven explains, people who seek refuge in another country, feel they should be hired for the value and expertise they could bring to a company in the future and not because of the situation they’re in at that moment’

Salesforce interviewed Sima about her journey, along with Gaspar Rodriguez, founder Refugeeforce and Eurofiber Group CIO Steven Klockaerts, as Refugeeforce, Salesforce and Eurofiber played a significant role in the start of her career in The Netherlands. This testbed enables, amongst others, applications of quantum cryptography, a way for partners to explore secure communications based on the fundamental laws of quantum physics. The testbed is open for new partners to join and co-explore quantum technology's possibilities.

Securing communication with quantum technology
As the number of cyber-crime incidents is increasing, concern has risen fuelled by the advent of quantum computing, data that is secured with today's standard cryptography methods are potentially under threat. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a technology that distributes a data encryption key by using quantum effects in such a way that it is more secure against wiretapping attacks. Today and in the future, QKD helps protect data from potential future quantum computer attacks and is believed to play an essential role in securing networks with high-value data, such as critical infrastructure, governmental, police and justice department and financial data.

QuTech—a collaboration between the TU Delft and TNO—is one of the globally leading institutes for quantum technology and has developed the specific MDI-QKD technology on which the testbed is based. MDI-QKD (measurement device-independent QKD) offers a range of advantages in security and cost-efficiency when building larger networks compared to existing point-to-point QKD.

Integrating MDI-QKD
In this program, QuTech partners with leading open digital infrastructure provider Eurofiber, and Juniper Networks, a global leader in AI networking, cloud and connected security solutions. This partnership enables QuTech to help integrate a proof-of-concept MDI-QKD system into a commercial optical fibre network. The MDI-QKD system will be deployed at several Eurofiber locations. With this collaboration, QuTech, Eurofiber and other partners can leverage Juniper Networks routing, switching and security solutions to test new solutions.

Investigating the challenges that arise during installation and operation will also aid the development of a next-generation MDI-QKD system. Collaboration with existing and new partners and potential customers will allow identifying new use cases and systematically investigating integration challenges from the proof-of-concept experiments.

Developing the fundaments for the future digital infrastructure
The project is co-funded by TKI (Topconsortium voor Kennis en Innovatie) High Tech Systems and Materials. The development of this testbed can be seen in a larger context of national efforts to build an ecosystem around quantum networks and connect users, equipment providers and technology providers. MDI-QKD is one of the building blocks for the National Quantum Network, which will be developed and deployed by the Quantum Delta foundation in one of its Catalyst programs. This program aims to lay the foundation for the next generation of digital infrastructure in the Netherlands.

Joshua Slater, Quantum Scientist engineer Qutech; “This is an important step for us because one of the goals of QuTech is to build and grow the quantum ecosystem. This is a final proof-of-concept before QuTech launches a spin-out to commercialize QKD technology further.”

Marc Hulzebos, Innovation Manager Eurofiber; “For Eurofiber this is a great opportunity to be at the forefront of developments in quantum network technology. We are excited to participate in the project and learn about the benefits of quantum security and quantum connectivity for our data infrastructures, including datacenters. It is our aim to provide the benefits of quantum security and connectivity to our customers as soon as they become available.”

Melchior Aelmans, Chief Architect at Juniper Networks; “We have received interest from our customers about advancements in Quantum technology and QKD, specifically. Our connected security solutions help customers secure every aspect of their networks. Participating in this testbed will provide valuable insights on quantum technology and how we can continue to keep customers protected now and into the future. The testbed offers a unique place to collaborate with partners on new security methods in Europe.”
<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2593/1920_userldquoalicerdquooneofthecomponentsoftheqkdtestbedinstalledinthedatacenter.creditpaulbrusseeforqutech.jpg?x=1657003596332" alt="User “Alice”, one of the components of the QKD Testbed installed in the datacenter.
